Port Elliott & Pelicans

It was a longer drive from Robe to our last campsite in Port Elliot however, although longer it was well worth it. The weather had picked up and we had a pleasant dry and sunny day for the journey along the Princes Highway. A significant part of the trip took us through The Coorong, an area rich in natural beauty with more than 200 species of birds in its waterways. Most popular and evident were the pelicans!

Mid-way through our drive arrived at Meningie. On the shores of Lake Albert, Meningie was established in the 1800s as a staging post for the local cattle graziers. The Lake Albert foreshore made for a pleasant stroll before we continued our journey.

We arrived in Port Elliot late afternoon and we were delighted to find out that our final night camping was likely to be the best yet! We managed to secure a pitch with views of the main beach at Horseshoe Bay and within spitting distance of the pristine coastline. That evening, after we had eaten and enjoyed a couple of glasses of bubbly we simply sat beneath the stars listening to the waves crashing along the shore - perfect!

The next morning we packed up and made the short trip to the charming town of Victor Harbour. We had hoped to take the Horse Drawn Tram to Granite Island but due to some repair work the horses were not working but we could still walk  across the bridge connecting Victor Harbour and the Island which is what we did. Granite Island is home to fairy penguins although we didn't see any on the day of our visit, nonetheless, it was still good to stretch our legs in the warm and pleasant sunshine.

Robe, South Australia

A damp and decidedly chilly start to the day. We took a last look at Blue Lake, the volcanic crater near to the site we had stayed at overnight nd then begn our sixth day on the road.

Today we had a relatively short drive to the small town of Robe which wood be our next overnight stop and also served to break up the longer stint planned for the next day when we made our way to Port Elliot. We arrived in Robe early afternoon and we were grateful that the sun was shining again and it was much warmer than the past couple of days. We found Robe to be a very pretty little town, full of heritage buildings and with great views of the ocean.

We parked up at a spot with a view of the sea and watched a wedding take place on the beach front! After lunch we found our campsite and having parked at our pitch we went for a lovely walk along the coastline enjoying the warm sunshine and the spectacular views. We had heard that thre was a decent fish & chip shop here so we went in search of it later that day, we got ourselves a fish and chip supper and sat in the camper once again admiring the panoramic views.

The Twelve Apostles

A much anticipated part of our GOR trip was the chance to see the Twelve Apostles. Within Port Campbell National Park, Victoria there are some amazing rock formations and landscape with the Twelve Apostles being the most iconic.

We had a mixed bag of cloudy and showery weather but lucky for us the sun shone and it stayed dry long enough for us to walk out to the viewing platforms and marvel at these wonders of nature.

It ws extremely windy and the ocean was rough with huge waves battering the cliffs and rocky outcrops. These weather conditions only served to illustrate in front of our eyes the dynamic forces of Mother Nature, truly awesome.

Whilst the Twelve Apostles get all the publicity, there are a number of other rock formations including, the Loch and Gorge, London Bridge and the Bay of Islands, all of which, in our view are equally impressive.

We continued our journey to Port Fairy and our next overnight stop. We arrived in Port Fairy early evening with enough light to wander around town and stroll along the little harbour ending up at yet another pretty beach. We stayed until the light started to fade and, hungry for supper headed back to the camper for an indoor picnic!

Koalas galore!

Apollo Bay is a medium sized town with all you need along one stretch of road, including a super bakery selling delicious donuts!! The best bit for us was the beautiful beach.

We walked along it into town on our first evening and strolled back with the sun setting. Lovely. Little did we know that this would be our last day of decent weather! During the night it rained heavily and the wind picked up rocking our little camper all over the place!! By morning the rain had eased an after a leisurely brekky we made our way out to Cape Otway, a route which we had read in our trusty guidebook where we would get to see koalas in the wild!

We were not disappointed!

For some 2 Kms we got to see loads of the furry fellas! Babies and adults slept in the trees oblivious to us. At first they were difficult to spot but after a while we found several in branches at head height!

Great photo opportunities and the highlight of our day!!
