2015 Road Trip - France - Part 3

Sunny and 28 degrees! Not a bad start to a Monday morning! Our final morning at Collioure we enjoyed a leisurely al fresco breakfast before making our way to the Catalan Pyrenees passing through the lovely village of Ceret renowned for its cherries and the reason we stopped off there! We purchased a huge kilo punnet of the most delicious cherries and had to discipline ourselves from over indulging!!

The scenery on the drive through to Villefranche de Conflent was very pretty with foothills, hilltop villages and mountains all around.

We had no idea where we were going to stop for the night and after checking out a couple of non starters we found a dutch owned campsite (La Rotja),up in the hills. It was so peaceful that we decided to stop here for 4 nights and give ourselves a chance to catch up with emails and our blog posts!

Tuesday by complete contrast was a washout!! It rained heavily all day!! Still, we made the most of our enforced confinement and played games and drank Jack Daniels for most of the day!!!

On Wednesday the weather was much better and we headed out on our bikes under sunny and clear blue skies. We cycled down into the town of Villefranche de Conflent (6km round trip but all uphill on the return journey!). We explored the old city and the ramparts and enjoyed the pleasantly warm sunshine. Back at base we cracked open the beers and wrote some postcards to send back home.

The next day was also sunny and dry and so we made the most of the fine weather by walking down into town where we had a light lunch sat in one of the cafes in the square and then did an 8 mile circuit which took in the little villages of Fuilla and Vernant-les-Bains. The mountain scenery was fantastic!
